Education - Classroom

Education

Technology in the classroom is more prevalent than ever. Teachers are using technology to make learning more interactive and accessible for their students. Studies prove that when students can better see and hear the subject matter being taught and the course material is more interactive, standardized testing scores increase.

Lastar offers many solutions for technology in education that help administrators support the needs of teachers and students. Our RapidRun® product line, for example, provides the signal pathway from the teacher's computer and/or DVD player to the projector. Not only does RapidRun replace multiple cables which saves space and installation time, but it also is fully capable of changing as the technology in the classroom changes. This saves schools money on future installations and helps eliminate waste. RapidRun can be fully integrated with other products, such as switches and multiplexors, to provide teachers powerful technology products that are simple to use and require no maintenance.

Healthcare

Like virtually every aspect of daily life, technology in healthcare continues grow and Lastar is proactive in developing solutions for this growing field. Many of Lastar's standard, off-the-shelf products are used in patient entertainment systems. Providing patients a positive distraction while undergoing minor procedures, for example minor dental work, helps them relax and enables the medical professional to perform his or her job more effectively.

Lastar also has extensive experience in developing custom cables used in medical imaging. These cables feature multiple connectors and vary widely in length and requirements. Leveraging Lastar's diverse global engineering and manufacturing capabilities, we have established ourselves as a leading supplier of custom cables for the medical imaging market. Customers such as GE OEC® have come to rely on Lastar's resource pool to cost-effectively produce the cables needed to connect multiple pieces of equipment used in medical imaging. Our Salt Lake City facility is ISO 9001-2000 certified - a very necessary designation in order to work with leading health care imaging equipment manufacturers.

Corporate Datacenter

Data storage and transfer requirements have grown exponential just over the last couple of years. What was once measured in megabytes has grown to gigabytes, and gigabytes have grown into terrabytes. With more data being stored and retrieved every day, the bandwidth requirements have also grown. To support these bandwidth requirements, Lastar offers a wide offering of off-the-shelf products as well as custom solutions. Optical fiber's ability to support greater bandwidth than traditional copper has made it the preferred medium for transporting information in the corporate datacenter.

For standard patching in the wiring closet or data center, Lastar offers hundreds of standard fiber and copper cabling solutions. For more complex applications, Lastar can both engineer and manufacture custom solutions. Lastar continues to invest in the talent needed to support the burgeoning needs for the corporate datacenter so that we can be proactive in providing timely solutions to our customers that support them.

Small/Medium Business

As the SMB market has grown, so has the diversity of its needs. Back in 1984 when Cables To Go was founded, many small and even medium businesses didn't have computers or if they did then they weren't networked. Nowadays, virtually every computer is connected to some type of network with Internet access and many different devices are connected to the PC.

Lastar's portfolio of SMB solutions encompasses a broad array of products and technologies. From the basic Cat5E Ethernet cable to USB adapters and even audio/video products, Lastar has a complete offering of solutions for the diverse needs of small and medium businesses. As new technologies emerge, we remain on the forefront to ensure that SMB customers, and the integrators that support, have the solutions needed to bridge old technologies with new technologies.

Consumer

Lastar's heritage began with building serial and parallel cables for KayPro computers back in the early 1980s. While these "luggable" computers weren't exactly marketed to the home consumer, they did open the opportunity for Lastar (then Cables To Go) to provide connectivity solutions to the consumer. As PC and portable electronic markets continue to grow, so has Lastar's offering of connectivity solutions for consumers.

Today, millions of consumers annually purchase Lastar products from Cables To Go channel partners such as Amazon.com®, TigerDirect®, and buy.com®. From iPod® accessories to the latest in display connecitivity technology to everything needed to wire a home theater, Lastar has developed the connectivity solutions that consumers need. With the shift to digital technology, new interfaces such as HDMI and DisplayPort are being introduced into the consumer market and Lastar is there to ensure consumers have the solutions needed to make these new technologies more usable.

Self-Service

The self-service market is comprised of manufacturers who build kiosks that enable consumers to make purchases or obtain information without the need for additional human interaction by, for example, a customer service representative. From the local grocery store to the consumer electronics "vending machine" in the airport, self-service is becoming more commonplace. Photo-processing kiosks are just one prominent example of self-service.

Lastar works with self-service kiosk manufacturers and helps them develop connectivity solutions for these specialty applications. While the technology within kiosks is very much standards based leveraging serial and USB protocols, the size and form factors needed to meet the application needs are anything but standard. Through Lastar's extensive network of resources, we provide self-service kiosk manufacturers the connectivity to connect on-board computers, serial controlled mechanisms, and video displays. By serving as the "resident expert of connectivity" for these manufacturers, we enable them to invest their time on their core competencies and enable them to out-source the specialty requirements to us.
